Arcas Building Solutions successfully completed the refurbishment and extension of Lifton House, delivering a modern, high-quality regional headquarters for GMB Union.
The project involved the full internal and external refurbishment of the original early 1900s building, alongside the demolition of a 1960s extension. This extension was replaced with a striking new addition featuring a fully glazed façade, allowing natural light to flow throughout the building and creating a bright, contemporary workspace.
Internally, Lifton House was transformed to an exceptional standard. The refurbished space includes glazed partitions, acoustic raft ceilings, and a feature glazed handrail system to the existing staircase. These elements came together to create an open, flexible working environment that respects and complements the building’s historic character while introducing modern workplace functionality.
Given the era of the demolished extension, extensive asbestos removal was required. Once all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were safely cleared, demolition proceeded, and the new extension was constructed to current design and energy performance standards.
To unify the old and new elements of the building, the external envelope of the 1900s structure was overclad in a modern zinc finish, effectively concealing the visual scars left by the demolition works and giving the building a sleek, refreshed appearance.
Upon completion, GMB successfully relocated from their former offices on Mosley Street into their new headquarters. Lifton House now provides a modern, purpose-built facility that meets the union’s operational needs while showcasing a careful balance between heritage and innovation.
