This project focused on the sensitive redevelopment of a prominent Grade II listed building in the heart of Manchester, transforming it into a flagship branch that successfully balances heritage preservation with modern functionality. The three-storey building underwent a comprehensive refurbishment to accommodate contemporary banking operations and office functions, while carefully preserving its historic character. A third of the total space was allocated as a free-to-use community area, reinforcing the client’s commitment to accessibility and public engagement.

The core scope of works included the creation of a fully integrated interior layout, featuring bespoke customer-facing areas and contemporary back-office facilities. Advanced mechanical and electrical systems were designed and installed, along with full integration of modern IT infrastructure to support secure, compliant banking operations. High-spec fire detection, security systems, and premium-quality fit-out works were also delivered across all areas.

A key priority throughout the project was the preservation of the building’s architectural heritage. Original features, including sash windows, were carefully restored in accordance with conservation requirements. All modern interventions—such as lighting, HVAC, and IT systems—were designed to complement the historic interior without compromising its integrity. The resulting aesthetic strikes a deliberate balance between old and new, blending original architectural details with a more open, informal, and accessible interior layout than is typically seen in high street banking environments.

Delivering a project of this nature within a busy city-centre location presented significant logistical and regulatory challenges. The project team maintained close collaboration with local planning authorities, building control officers, fire safety officers, and transport partners to navigate site constraints and heritage obligations. The successful coordination of these stakeholders was critical to maintaining progress while ensuring full compliance with heritage and safety regulations.

The outcome is a modern, customer-focused environment that reflects both the brand’s evolving identity and the building’s historical significance. The transformation has been praised by Building Control for its attention to detail and sensitive execution, and the completed space now stands as a benchmark for how historic buildings can be adapted for modern use without compromising their character.
