We’ve been involved in this incredible project from its earliest stages, so attending the official opening of Newcastle Building Society’s brand-new super branch in the heart of the city was a truly proud moment for everyone at Arcas Building Solutions.

As the main commercial contractor, we were entrusted with transforming a historic Grade II listed building — over 200 years old — into one of the UK’s largest building society branches. What was once a French Connection retail store is now a state-of-the-art banking and community space spread across five floors and 10,000 square feet.

This project represents more than just a technical achievement for us. It reflects everything Arcas stands for: quality, care, collaboration, and the power of construction to give heritage buildings new purpose.

Honouring the Past, Building for the Future

Delivering a project of this scale within a listed structure in a compact city centre site came with its share of challenges. But as an experienced commercial contractor, these are the environments where we thrive.

Our works included a complete strip-out, a full-height rear extension, and a modern retail fit out — all while carefully preserving original architectural elements like historic glass panels and sections of the staircase.

Key project elements:

  • Rear extension housing eight stair flights to improve circulation
  • Refurbishment of five internal floors with new floor finishes, decoration, and M&E systems
  • A new sixth-floor plant room for mechanical and lift services
  • Fit-out of multi-functional spaces designed for flexible working and community use
  • Sensitive restoration of protected heritage features

This was not only a construction project but a reimagining of a space that now blends historic charm with modern functionality.
