We are proud to showcase the successful transformation of a landmark Grade II-listed building in the heart of Newcastle city centre. Once home to the French Connection fashion retailer, this historic five-storey corner unit—now over 200 years old—has been repurposed into a modern, multi-use facility for Newcastle Building Society, seamlessly blending rich architectural heritage with contemporary functionality.

Appointed as the main contractor, Acras Building Solutions delivered a full-scale refurbishment and extension of the building, revitalising it into a vibrant community hub and modern office environment. The project involved constructing a full-height rear extension to the landlocked area of the site, housing eight new stair flights to improve accessibility across all levels. Comprehensive internal refurbishment was carried out across all five floors, incorporating new mechanical and electrical systems, floor finishes, and decorative works, alongside the creation of a plant room on the sixth floor.

The development also introduced flexible, multi-functional spaces designed for events, meetings, and community engagement. Throughout, our team worked meticulously to preserve the building’s unique historical features—including original glass panels on the upper floors and sections of the original staircase—ensuring its character and heritage were retained.

This extensive refurbishment secures the long-term future of an important piece of Newcastle’s architectural heritage, merging modern functionality with respect for its storied past. For Newcastle Building Society, this flagship project represents far more than a physical upgrade; it stands as a testament to their enduring commitment to community, inclusivity, and sustainability. The result is a welcoming, versatile space designed not only to serve but to connect and support the people at the heart of the region.
