Student Central

Arcas Building Solutions successfully delivered a remarkable transformation of Northumbria University’s Student Central at its City Campus. This multi-million-pound redevelopment reimagined the university’s original 1969 library, transforming it into a vibrant, light-filled hub that centralises all Student and Library Services in one welcoming, contemporary space at the heart of the campus.

The project presented a number of unique challenges due to the site’s structural and logistical constraints. Located in a landlocked area with restricted access on three sides, the delivery of materials required meticulous planning and coordination. With access limited to rigid vehicles, the Arcas team managed complex deliveries of structural steelwork and specialist glazing through a narrow entrance, ensuring work progressed smoothly and safely despite the constraints.

The works involved substantial demolition and remodelling of the existing two-storey administration and library building. The gross floor area was expanded to improve functionality, and a stunning central lightwell was introduced to allow natural light to cascade through both floors, creating an open and uplifting environment for students and staff alike.

While modernising the space, Arcas took great care to preserve and integrate elements of the building’s heritage. Historic features and original artwork, integral to the building’s identity, were carefully protected and reinstated as part of the final design—honouring the past while embracing innovation.

Externally, the refurbishment included the installation of a new steel canopy and curtain walling across all elevations. These upgrades enhanced the building’s appearance while improving energy performance and reducing solar gain. Despite a tight summer programme, works were completed in time for the start of the new academic year, allowing students to return to a refreshed, functional, and inspiring space.

Today, Student Central remains a focal point of Northumbria University’s City Campus—embodying the institution’s commitment to providing high-quality, accessible, and student-focused spaces. The building’s lightwell, energy-efficient design, and sensitively retained heritage features stand as a testament to Arcas Building Solutions’ commitment to excellence, collaboration, and innovation.
